Washington Post (06/03/92), P. B3
Elizabeth Taylor, founding national chairman of the American Foundation
for AIDS Research, is angry that the federal government has not taken
action with proposed AIDS funding. The celebrity demanded from a Senate
committee yesterday the promised funding for the Ryan White Care Act, an
AIDS relief measure passed two years ago. "When the president signed
this bill, a yearly spending level of $875 million was authorized,"
Taylor said to the Senate Labor Committee. However, only one-third of
the funds were approved last year. "For 1993, the president has asked
for only an additional $27 million. This is simply not enough," she
said. Taylor was joined by Ryan's mother, Jeanne White, and AIDS
patients who told how AIDS is "impoverishing, torturing and finally
killing young men and women." Taylor said that if the funding is not
approved she would "come and ask for it again and again and again, until
this is done. She added, "I will not be silenced. I will not give up.
I will not be ignored."
