Sandra Thurman, director of the U.S. Office of National AIDS
Policy, asserted Saturday that leadership and compassion are
two key qualities for dealing with the AIDS epidemic.
Speaking at the "AIDS Now and in the New Millennium" forum
hosted by the National Association of People With AIDS,
Thurman said that effective approaches to AIDS were being
hampered nationally by complacency and internationally by
denial. The national forum was held in Kansas City.
