While it welcomes a deal brokered by former President Bill
Clinton to supply low-price AIDS drugs to developing
countries, South Africa's Treatment Action Campaign warns the
deal will not solve all the nation's AIDS treatment problems.
"The Treatment Action Campaign feels that this is a very
positive development," said TAC spokesperson Sipho Mthathi,
"and it couldn't have happened at a better time in our
country, where we are busy trying to decide how to make
treatment available to people who will die without it." But
she added, "We are aware that this isn't going to bring about
an instant solution, and that a lot of work will have to be
done to actually make this development a reality.... So, while
we welcome the opportunity, we also realize that this doesn't
mean that all our problems are solved immediately."
