PHILIPPINES: Philippine Bishops Call for Sacking over Condoms

Agence France Presse (02.23.10) - Tuesday, February 23, 2010

In a statement posted online today, three Roman Catholic bishops urged the ouster of Health Secretary Esperanza Cabral, who led a Valentine's Day condom distribution effort to fight HIV/AIDS. "It's worrying because it is the morality in society, especially among the youth, that is at stake," said Bishop Ramon Arguelles, one of the signers. The statement called on President Gloria Arroyo to fire Cabral. About 75 million of the Philippines' 93 million residents are members of the Catholic Church, whose teachings forbid artificial birth control, including condoms.
