The State of California Department of Health Services asked
us to let our readers know that Medi-Cal can pay private
insurance premiums, in some cases. This benefits the
individual because private insurance is usually better than
Medi-Cal. And California likes the program because it has
saved an estimated $22 million for Medi-Cal during the last
two years.
To be eligible for these programs, you must be eligible for
Medi-Cal, be enrolled in a health insurance plan (including
COBRA continuation) or have an employer's group health plan
available for enrollment, and have high on-going medical
costs.
For more information, talk to your MediCal eligibility
worker, or call 800/952-5294, ext. 111, to ask about the HIPP
and EGHP programs.
