Most breast lesions, including those that are malignant, are found by women themselves, which emphasizes the importance of breast self-examination. Comprehensive knowledge of breast anatomy and the characteristics that suggest that a mass is benign or suspicious aids primary care physicians in choosing the proper sequence of action.
