OBJECTIVE: To determine the impact of the 1992 revision of the AIDS case definition by sex and risk factor for HIV infection in andalusian's patients. METHODS: 1.106 HIV patients were evaluated clinical and with CD4+ lymphocyte count in two cross sectional prevalence studies made in 1992, in 16 andalusian hospitals. All were identified by CDC/1987 case definition. The patients were stratified according CDC/87 versus CDC/92 case definition by sex and risk factor. RESULTS: Among them, 424 (38.3%) agree with the CDC/1987 AIDS case definition, and 353 (83.2%) of them had less than 200 CD4+ cells. 175 (25.7%) patients had < 200 CD4+ counts without CDC/87 case definition. TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. CONCLUSIONS: 1) The CDC/92 case definition increases a 20% the number of cases in our country. 2) This increase is highest in women and IDU.
