Prisoners in AIDS Counseling & Education (PACE) is an inmate-run program implemented in many New York State correctional facilities. Ignorance and fear of HIV have led to discrimination and violence against HIV-positive prisoners. PACE runs educational programs for prisoners, families, friends, and prison staff members to help them cope with their fear and distress. Educational programs include background on the immune system, opportunistic infections, methods of transmission, and other related topics. PACE also provides peer and professional counseling for HIV-positive prisoners.
