Supplying safe drinking water, cost effectively, to persons living with HIV disease and AIDS.

Int Conf AIDS. 1996 Jul 7-12;11(1):170 (abstract no. Mo.C.1674). Unique

Issue: Drinking Water Safety. With the increase for demand for safe drinking water that is bacteria free and the low income levels for those living with HIV disease and AIDS, what resources are available to get safe drinking water to those individuals. Project: Intensive research about intestinal parasites and the methods which ensures the removal of those bacteria CRYPTOSPORIDIUM, GIARDIA, TOXOPLASMOSIS). Identifying those water companies which use the methods that ensure removal of those bacteria (distallation, reverse osmosis, micron-filteration). Entering into a partnership that includes Canadian Springs Water Company, AIDS Vancouver's Emergency Assistance Fund, British Columbia Persons with AIDS Society's Complimentary Health Fund Program. This partnership allows our HIV+ membership to have home delivery of treated safe drinking water at no cost. Results: At present we have 150 members receiving home delivery of bacteria free, safe drinking water. Discounted rates for our members by the Water Company, AIDS Vancouver paying for the yearly rental cost of the dispenser at 50% off, and BCPWA'S CHF program reimbursing the cost of the water. Lessons Learned: That community based organizations can assist with cooperation from other areas, the progress, confidence and self worth of individuals living with HIV disease.
