Maine's four certified needle-exchange programs - based in
Portland, Bangor, Ellsworth, and Augusta - are in financial
trouble. The NEPs receive neither state nor federal dollars,
and the private grant money that supports them is running out.
The NEPs collected and disposed of 260,050 syringes in the
year ending Oct. 31, according to the Maine Center for Disease
Control and Prevention.
