MISSOURI: Congressmen to Assess Progress at VA Hospital

Associated Press (02.21.12) - Tuesday, February 21, 2012

On Wednesday, Reps. Russ Carnahan (D-Mo.) and Jeff Miller (R- Fla.) will visit the Cochran VA Medical Center in St. Louis to review efforts to improve sterilization processes there. In 2010, the hospital suspended surgeries and notified more than 1,800 veterans that improperly cleaned dental equipment may have exposed them to blood-borne infections like HIV, hepatitis C and hepatitis B. According to the VA, the risk of infection was remote and no illnesses were linked to the faulty sterilization; surgeries resumed last year. Miller is chair of the House Veterans Affairs Committee.
