Australian Associated Press (03.23.12) - Tuesday, March 27,
A new $1.2 million (US $1.3 million) TB research lab has
opened at the Centenary Institute in Sydney. "We're applying
all that we learn to develop new ways to fight TB, potential
new drugs to treat TB, new vaccines to protect us all from
this scourge, and better public health interventions," said
lead researcher Dr. Bernadette Saunders. She cited the rise of
drug-resistant TB strains as a major challenge facing
scientists. At the facility, the largest TB lab of its kind in
Australia, researchers wear biocontainment suits while working
in the airlock-sealed lab, Saunders said.
