Exhibit deals with AIDS stigma

Bangkok Art and Culture Centre presents "You Are Not Alone", a contemporary exhibition that features the works of 16 Thai and international artists whose aim is to promote better understanding of AIDS and those who are HIV-infected.

Despite medical advances in dealing with the disease and preventing its spread, society is still awash with discrimination and prejudices against people with HIV. Promoting the right notion of AIDS is a first step to change this attitude and correct the misunderstanding caused by bias and ignorance.

Various forms of contemporary art are among the mediums being used to help change misconceptions and negative attitudes and replace it with a mindset that would encourage open dialogue on the subject, which in essence is the message the artists wish to convey.

The artists share their individual visions on the causes and consequences of AIDS as well as ways to fight it. Their works offer a vision of the dreaded disease from the perspective of different countries on different continents that experience the illness in one form or another.

"You Are Not Alone" goes on show at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre today and runs until April 18. The exhibition is presented with an educational programme based on clinical and social reality associated with the disease. The centre is located at Pathumwan intersection and opens Tue-Sun from 10am-9pm. Call 02-214-6630_8 ext 519.
