AIDS Project Los Angeles Announces Concrete Hero Urban Obstacle Challenge to Raise Funds in Los Angeles This Summer: Innovative fundraising concept will help charity to improve the lives of people living with HIV/AIDS in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, April 4, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA) launched a new fundraising event concept on Wednesday that will help raise money to improve the lives of people living with HIV/AIDS in Los Angeles.  Positioned as The Ultimate Urban Obstacle Challenge, Concrete Hero will take place on July 15th at L.A. LIVE and the route will take participants through the surrounding streets and alleyways of downtown Los Angeles.

"We are absolutely thrilled about Concrete Hero," said Craig E. Thompson, Executive Director at APLA.

"This event will enable APLA to draw engagement from a younger demographic, and will appeal to all kinds of people, ages and athletic abilities.  It will be a fun, urban-themed obstacle adventure designed to help raise money which will be put to use supporting APLA-funded programs like the Vance North Necessities of Life Program, food pantries which distribute more than 145K bags of groceries to people facing HIV/AIDS and hunger in Los Angeles, or the APLA Dental Services which offers more than 11,500 no-cost and low-cost dental procedures to people living with HIV/AIDS in Los Angeles County," added Thompson.

When asked what Concrete Hero will be like, Thompson smiled and said, "It's going to be very LA."

Concrete Hero will incorporate a mix of iconic LA landmarks, which are replicated as obstacles along the course route.  Participants will complete the course by leaping over parked cars in a massive "Carmageddon" pile-up, scaling a mock "Hollywood Sign," and swinging over "Tar Pits" in addition to other exhilarating urban-themed elements before concluding with an urban-themed block party.

Designed to be an event for everyone, those who register can choose to race in the chip-timed 5K Competitive Challenge or the 2.5K Fun Run, which has a range of tamer obstacles like the "LAX Bag Grab" or "Shopping Cart Shuffle."

"I want to personally invite everyone to join us for Concrete Hero!  Rally your friends, family, neighbors and colleagues, and encourage them to register today at www.concretehero.org or call 323-462-HERO (4376)," said Thompson.
