The Springfield School Committee on Thursday night approved a
policy allowing students in city middle and high schools to
access condoms beginning Sept. 1. School nurses and health
clinics will distribute condoms to students who request them;
however, the youths must receive counseling, including a
discussion of abstinence, and instruction on how to use and
store condoms. Parents have the option of signing a form
barring their children from obtaining condoms. The policy
passed in a 4-3 vote.
