Ending new HIV infections among children by 2015 and
safeguarding the health of mothers with HIV are the goals of
"Believe It. Do It.", a new campaign introduced Tuesday by
UNAIDS. An estimated 390,000 children become infected with HIV
each year, while some 42,000 women die of complications
arising from HIV and pregnancy. "We have the commitment of
world leaders, but the clock is ticking and we cannot get from
390,000 to zero without you," UNAIDS Executive Director Michel
Sidibe said in a statement. The campaign will use an
interactive website and social media to raise awareness of the
problem of HIV among children, encourage people to take
action, and support mothers.
