RI gov, top lawmakers to mark World AIDS Day

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island's leaders are observing World AIDS Day to highlight continuing efforts to fight the disease.

Gov. Lincoln Chafee (CHAY'-fee), U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse and Rhode Island House Speaker Gordon Fox are scheduled to speak at Friday's Statehouse event.

Tomas Bertrand, director of AIDS Project Rhode Island, says the event will help raise awareness about a public health problem that is far from over.

More than 100 new cases of HIV infection were reported in 2010 in Rhode Island.
