Through a mobile testing unit, Dallas County (Texas) Health and Human Services (HHS) offers monthly free HIV/STD testing to college campuses in the Metroplex area. November 6 was the final day this fall to receive free HIV/STD testing at the Brookhaven College Campus. The mobile testing is offered for the convenience of students who want to be tested but are either unaware of testing locations or have schedules that do not allow them time to make a doctor’s appointment. Even with a mobile testing unit, some students do not want others to see them at the unit; other students think that everyone who is sexually active should be tested and have no worries about being seen. Mobile unit secretarial employee Larry Arrington declares, “Some people are worried about what others think when they come aboard, but they have to see it the way we see it. If you are here, you care about your health. It looks better when your health is important to you than if you don’t take care of yourself because you are worried about being judged.”
The Dallas HHS mobile unit travels to a new location every day. The staff provides testing for HIV/AIDS, syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea. For persons ages 16–25, syphilis is the trending STD, while a similar age range of 14–25 has HIV/AIDS as the trending disease. When the unit is on a college campus, the hours are from 11:00 a.m. through 4:00 p.m., unless otherwise stated online. Results are available approximately two weeks after testing. Depending on the testing location, rapid results are available for syphilis and HIV. Visit www.dallascounty.org for the location schedule.
