SFGate.com (San Francisco) (01.14.13) On January 14, Rep. Bakari Sellers (D-S.C.) re-introduced a bill in which seventh-grade students could receive free human papillomavirus vaccines to prevent this sexually transmitted, cancer-causing virus. Former South Carolina first lady Jenny Sanford and doctors from the Medical University of South Carolina joined Sellers in voicing support for the bill. An identical bill already passed both houses of the South Carolina General Assembly in 2012, but Governor Nikki Haley vetoed it, calling it an unfunded mandate. Haley stated that this issue should not involve the government, but needs to be discussed by parents, their children, and their doctor.
