AUSTRALIA: STDs on Rise in WA, Call to Make Sex Education Compulsory

News.com.au (02.25.13)

The Youth Affairs Council (YAC) of Western Australia (WA) urges that lawmakers require all schools—including private and religious schools—to implement the national sex education curriculum to halt rising STD incidence. According to YAC Executive Officer Craig Comrie, WA has the second highest chlamydia and gonorrhea incidence in seven Australia territories, and 20 percent of WA youth have chlamydia. Comrie also urged political leaders to establish youth-specific sexual health service centers, especially in metropolitan areas.
