In a press briefing on March 20 in Johannesburg, South Africa, UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé joined health leaders from Africa and other international organizations to announce a new initiative intended to accelerate progress in fighting TB and HIV. The initiative will be formally unveiled in Mbabane, Swaziland, on March 21, when Sidibé and the other leaders sign the “Swaziland Statement.” The initiative includes a group of investments worth more than $120 million that will be targeted toward expediting progress in fighting the two diseases over the next 1,000 days. The project will also collaborate with South African Development Community countries to work toward the goal of cutting in half fatalities from TB and HIV-associated TB by the year 2015.
