According to the Ohio AIDS Coalition (OAC), 40 percent of all new HIV infections in the United States are within the 13 to 29 age group, bringing a young face to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Tyler TerMeer, OAC’s Director and AIDS Resource Center (ARC) Prevention Director, explains that while the HIV/AIDS epidemic has changed dramatically over the past few decades, a second wave of infection among young people who have never known a world free from HIV is beginning to be seen. With early detection, HIV can be a manageable disease, but many young people avoid testing. At ARC, located in the Short North neighborhood of Columbus, the focus is on prevention, with free HIV testing at locations, including bars and other outreach locations that reach younger populations.
