NY Rep.: VA says 18 vets positive for hepatitis

BUFFALO, N.Y. - A New York congressman says 18 veterans have tested positive for hepatitis following revelations that the VA hospital where they'd been treated may have improperly used insulin pens on multiple patients.

Rep. Chris Collins says Thursday the Department of Veterans Affairs has no way of knowing how the patients contracted the disease. But the vets were tested amid concern that they may have been exposed to hepatitis or HIV through the use of multi-dose insulin pens.

Hospital officials in January said the multi-dose shots that were meant to be used on one patient may have been shared, raising the possibility of contamination for more than 700 patients.

Collins' office says nearly 400 patients have been tested so far, with 12 testing positive for hepatitis B and six for hepatitis C.
