MAINE: Bowdoin Students Play Soccer for Annual HIV/AIDS Event

Recently, more than 100 students of Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, supported Grassroot Soccer’s fourth annual charity soccer tournament. The event began at Bowdoin four years ago to raise money and awareness for the nonprofit organization Grassroot Soccer, which uses the popularity of soccer to educate sub-Saharan African youth about HIV/AIDS. The tournament featured a “jerseys and kicks” theme pub night, free STD testing day in collaboration with the college health center and Peer Health, screening of the documentary “How to Survive a Plague,” and a Thorne dining hall night that educated students about HV/AIDS statistics. The 22 teams registered for the tournament helped to raise more than $1,000.
