Rep. Chris Collins (R-N.Y.) stated May 9 that 18 veterans have tested positive for hepatitis, following the disclosure that the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) hospital where they received treatment may have improperly re-used insulin pens on multiple patients. Collins said that the VA did not know how the patients contracted hepatitis. Veterans sought testing amid concerns in January from hospital officials who announced that the multi-dose shots meant to be used on one patient may have been shared. This announcement raised the possibility of hepatitis or HIV exposure for more than 700 patients. Collins's office noted that almost 400 patients have been tested so far; 12 have tested.
