UNITED STATES: Cepheid's Drug-Resistant TB Test Gets FDA Nod

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently given marketing approval to drug manufacturer Cepheid’s TB test Xpert MTB/RIF Assay, that can both detect the bacteria that causes TB and determine whether that bacteria strain is resistant to rifampin, an antibiotic used to treat the infection. The FDA said that although the test is complicated, it provides results in approximately two hours, compared with traditional methods that require one to two months.
