'Real World' star Sean Sasser dead at 44

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- Former "Real World: San Francisco" cast member Sean Sasser has died after a short battle with mesothelioma, his partner, Michael Kaplan, said. He was 44.

Sasser was a pastry chef, as well as an AIDS activist and educator, who was HIV positive for 25 years.

He was diagnosed with mesothelioma last month and died Wednesday, Kaplan told CNN Thursday.

Sasser became an overnight celebrity when his relationship with Pedro Zamora was documented in Season 3 of the MTV reality show in 1994.

Zamora died of AIDS Nov. 11, 1994, with Sasser by his side just hours after the show's season finale, which featured the two men exchanging vows during a commitment ceremony, a landmark in U.S. broadcast television history, CNN said.

"RIP to a member of the MTV family, groundbreaking Real World star + AIDS activist," MTV tweeted upon hearing the news of Sasser's death.
