On August 12, a team of eight South Africans and two Americans completed a 1,440-kilometer cycling run they began on July 28, from Johannesburg to Cape Town. Team Captain Bryan Urbsaitis, founder of the nonprofit organization AIDS Ride South Africa, said the team cycled to raise awareness for HIV/AIDS, to raise funds, and to educate. Urbsaitis was diagnosed with HIV in 2006 but wanted to educate people that the diagnosis did not have to be a death sentence and that those with the disease still could live a full life. The team distributed condoms at several locations along the way, and Urbsaitis spoke frankly about his diagnosis and encouraged individuals to get tested.
