MONTANA: County Health Department to Do Outreach in Taverns

Montana Standard (12.12.2013) Aids Weekly Plus

The Montana Standard recently reported that, to correspond with World AIDS Day, the Butte-Silver Bow Health Department in Butte, Mont., will be conducting simultaneous outreach sessions at local bars on Friday, December 13. Butte-Silver Bow Health Educator Katie Smith and Family/Health Services Director Jamie Paul will distribute bags of condoms and lubricant while discussing STDs, HIV, and the importance of safe sex practices. Many people usually do not realize the statistics linked to unsafe sex practices, according to Smith. “One in two sexually active people [doesn’t] know they have [an STD],” she said. “One in four [doesn’t] know they have HIV.” Their education efforts will include informing patrons that having another STD makes a person more vulnerable to become infected with HIV. Smith and Paul also will tell patrons that the Butte-Silver Bow Health Department provides rapid HIV testing, with results provided in 20 minutes, by appointment at its 25 West Front Street location in Butte. The list of Butte taverns scheduled for an outreach session include Jim’s Bar, Cinz, Met Tavern, Party Palace, Maloney’s, Depot, Irish Times, Vu Villa, Club 13, Pair-a-dice, Dano’s, M&M, and Pisser’s Palace. World AIDS Day, observed worldwide every December 1, promotes awareness and education about HIV/AIDS. Approximately 35 million people worldwide currently are HIV-infected, including approximately 1 million people living in the United States.
