An article in the Solomon Star reports that Solomon Islands health officials are encouraging the public to get tested for HIV. The country does not require mandatory testing, but according to John Gela, coordinator of Solomon Islands National AIDS Council (SINAC), not many people get tested voluntarily and he hopes to change that. “We do not force anybody to do so, but if you think you are at risk because of multiple sex partners or unwanted sexual behavior, we urge you to do a voluntary check,” he said, adding that testing is free in the province’s testing centers. SINAC is reviewing the country’s statutes to determine better ways to combat the disease in the small island country. Gila said the increase of STDs and HIV is a concern for everyone.
