The Charleston Chronicle reported on a new AIDS billboard awareness campaign titled “AIDS is a Civil Rights Issue” in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) released the national campaign to keep in the forefront the fact that the African-American and Latino communities persist in being disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS and that it should be a basic human right that anyone and everyone has access to HIV prevention and treatment.
African Americans comprise 44 percent of persons with HIV, yet account for only 12 percent of the population. Latinos comprise 21 percent of all new HIV infections in the United States, yet only make up 16 percent of the population.
“We decided to commemorate the Martin Luther King Holiday with the launch of ‘AIDS is a Civil Rights Issue,’ our new national awareness and advocacy campaign,” said Michael Weinstein, President of AIDS Healthcare Foundation. “Through the campaign, we hope to open dialogue with stakeholders in the community, the public health arena, and faith-based groups as well as public officials.”
AHF is partnering with In The Meantime Men to bring the billboard campaign to the following areas: Atlanta; Washington, DC; Columbus, Ohio; Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Jackson, Mississippi; South Florida; and Los Angeles. For more information, visit http://www.aidshealth.org/civil-rights
