Hundreds March On Durban Aids Conference

Hundreds of Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) supporters marched on Monday to the Durban International Convention Centre where the South African Aids Conference is being held.

TAC spokesman S'bu Khanyile said the group was demanding that talks between the government, labour, business and civil societies on the National Framework of Treatment and Prevention Plan be resumed.

"If the plan is adopted and implemented, anti-retroviral drugs will be made available in public-held institutions. We also demand that working conditions be improved and condom-distributors broadened," Khanyile said.

The TAC received messages of support from Durban Gay and Lesbian Society which also took part in the march.

Among the dignitaries attending the conference are national Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, health MECs from different provinces, Aids activists and academics.
