Playwright Larry Kramer has been fighting the AIDS epidemic for eight
years, fueled by the memory of the hundreds of people he knew who died of
AIDS. Kramer co-founded the Gay Men's Health Crisis and later formed the
protest group ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power). The New York
Shakespeare Festival Festival produced his play "The Normal Heart" in
1985. It starred Brad Davis as a gay activist. Critics have described
the play as a defiant shout against bureAUcratic and personal inaction in
the face of AIDS. Kramer's new play, "Just Say No," deals only
peripherally with the disease, but once again attempts to bring shocking
conditions to the public's attention. The setting for the play is
Georgetown, the capital of a country called New Columbia. The characters
include Mrs. Potentate and her ballet dancer son.
