Bangor Daily News (04.02.12) - Wednesday, April 04, 2012 US Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins announced last week the Frannie Peabody Center (FPC) in Portland is receiving $3.8 million in federal funds for its HIV/AIDS work. Three of FPC's ongoing programs to provide housing support services for people living with HIV/AIDS were granted: $1.05 million, for the HAVEN Initiative, a permanent housing program for clients dealing with what the grant announcement described as "other complex needs," like mental health and substance abuse disorders. $1.31 million, for HAVEN's Outreach to Rural Maine Initiative, which provides rental, utility, mortgage and housing placement assistance to 100 qualifying households. *$1.43 million, for HAVEN's Outreach to Racial and Ethnic Minorities Initiative, whose rental assistance benefits 41 chronically homeless people and families in Portland, including many who are immigrants or refugees. "This funding will be critical as the dedicated employees and volunteers of the Frannie Peabody Center continue to provide vital services to the community, and continue to provide compassionate care for the community infected and affected by HIV/AIDS in Maine," the senators said in a joint statement.
