Over the past few years we have interviewed hundreds of gay men at our research site, the Center for Health, Identity, Behavior and Prevention Studies (CHIBPS), at New York University. These men have ranged in age from 18 to 67 and they have been HIV-positive, HIV-negative and unsure of their status. They have come to us from their homes in every part of the city, willingly and graciously sharing their thoughts and experiences regarding sex, relationships and HIV. It was painful at times for many to recall and narrate these stories. At times, they were difficult to hear.
