The University of Arizona’s Center of Excellence in Women’s Health plans to use an $878,000 grant to fund a multidiscliplinary team in focusing on ways to provide more health information to underserved Hispanic women in Pima County, Ariz. The Pima County Cervical Cancer Prevention Partnership identified priority health issues of cervical cancer, sexually transmitted infections, and depression as the three-fold focus of the grant’s effort. According to lead researcher Dr. Francisco Garcia, Hispanics made up more than one-third of Pima County’s population, with 20 percent of the adults lacking health insurance.
