In January 2013, Oregon launched a text messaging system, www.OregonReminders.org, which allowed individuals to sign up to receive text messages reminders to get tested for HIV. According to Renee Yandel of the HIV Alliance of Eugene, the service might help to normalize the testing process by sending regularly scheduled reminders that encouraged subscribers to get tested as soon as conveniently possible. The service also provided access to health information on risky versus safe behaviors, as a means to overcome rumors about the disease. The state said that since launching the program in January, more than 500 individuals had signed up to receive the messages.
