In a recent article, Southern Maryland Newspapers Online reported that Charles County health officials held a free HIV testing event in honor World AIDS Day and declared December a month for AIDS awareness. HIV testing is free at the county health department and systems are in place to help a person cope with the disease should they test positive, said Amanda Wilcox, a community health educator with the Charles County Department of Health, at the event.
The HIV screening event also provided education and awareness about HIV to county residents. County Health Officer Dr. Dianna E. Abney was pleased to see the event’s large turnout, which was held at Servants of Christ Ministries in La Plata, Md. “I am really thrilled at the turnout. … Each of you has done a good job taking the responsibility to get more educated,” Abney said.
