CTV News (Kitchener, Canada) (12.03.2013)
CTV News Kitchener recently reported that chlamydia cases constituted approximately half of all 2012 STD diagnoses in Waterloo, Canada. Add to that the cases of influenza, campylobacteriosis, salmonella, and hepatitis C, and it shows that five diseases accounted for 80 percent of infectious disease in the Ontario region in 2012. “There are some areas where, as a community, we can do a little better in terms of prevention efforts,” says Dr. Hsiu-Li Wang, the region’s associate medical officer of health. Influenza claimed 13 lives out of the almost 400 reported cases. Waterloo’s rates for infectious diseases are at or below those of Ontario as a whole. The region tracks 39 infectious diseases, with most cases being reported to the health unit.
