The Chicago Tribune reported that the Lake County Health Department will observe National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD) by hosting a free testing and awareness event. Health department employees will provide information, screenings, and education on transmission, care, and treatment of HIV as well as hepatitis and STDs. The free HIV awareness event will take place on Friday, February 7, at the Belvidere Medical Building, 2400 Belvidere Road in Waukegan, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
NBHAAD is a national event to encourage the black community to curb the rise of the disease among African Americans by getting tested, treated, and involved. According to 2010 statistics, African Americans accounted for nearly 44 percent of new HIV infections, while only comprising 14 percent of the population. Black gay and bisexual men ages 13–29 have the highest rate of new infections of any other age and racial group. Visit www.blackaidsday.org for more information on NBHAAD.
