Pharmaceutical Business Review reported that Walgreens has announced expanded access to its “Connected Cares” hepatitis C virus (HCV) program through its HCV-specialized pharmacies. The program focuses on education and support to help patients reach sustained virologic response and improved quality of life by adhering to their treatment regimens. The HCV-specialized pharmacies provide new HCV medications and specially trained pharmacists to understand the new oral treatments. The pharmacists also can identify HCV-associated health concerns, and can help patients with HIV coinfection or other comorbid conditions such as diabetes or hypertension. Support services include 24-hour access to the specially trained pharmacists, help verifying insurance and financial assistance options, medication pick-up or delivery options, and pharmacist-led regimen check points to monitor response to therapy and encourage adherence.
