Calgary Sun (11.29.12) Acquiescing to parent’s wishes, the Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD) trustees have given their approval for HPV vaccinations to be given on school district property. With signed parental consent, female students will now be able to receive vaccinations against sexually transmitted disease that causes cervical cancer within their schools. Revisiting a 2008 decision, the CCSD consulted the parent councils at 104 of its 105 schools, and 91 of the schools returned majority opinions in favor of allowing the vaccinations. While Bishop Fred Henry had said late last month that the vaccine leads to increased promiscuity, he noted that revisiting issue was due to activists’ threats of a lawsuit, internal disagreements, and other boards breaking away from the ban. The changes could take effect as soon as this year, but they will also be retroactive, seeking to vaccinate anyone who is eligible, has a signed parental consent form, and was missed following the 2008 ban.
