In Providence, R.I., 20 buildings are being illuminated in red to celebrate World AIDS Day. The buildings include City Hall, the Statehouse, the Biltmore Hotel, the Rhode Island Convention Center, and the Providence Performing Arts Center, among many others. Organizers held a ceremony on the evening of December 3 at the Biltmore Hotel with Providence mayor Angel Taveras, community leaders, and health professionals to mark the occasion. Buildings throughout the United States have been illuminated in red—the color associated with efforts to fight HIV/AIDS—as part of the (RED) campaign. Businesses participating in the campaign are donating a portion of their profits to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria, which was founded in 2006 by Bono and Bobby Shriver and focuses on ending AIDS in Africa.
