On January 22, Irvington, Ala., health and school officials held a meeting to answer parents’ questions after a Pearl Haskew Elementary School third grade teacher tested positive for TB the week prior. More than 100 third grade students and teachers were required to undergo testing January 23, with the results scheduled to be read on January 25. Mobile County Health Department tuberculosis program manager Megan Finnigan noted the likelihood of TB infection in this case is very low. While some parents expressed concern that the school had not been sterilized or disinfected following the teacher’s positive diagnosis, Finnigan said the school had been inspected and was found to be sufficiently clean, with an air infiltration system fit enough for a hospital.
