News-Sentinel (Ft. Wayne) (02.01.13) Aids Weekly Plus On February 7, Fort Wayne, Ind., will observe National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day with events planned to encourage African Americans to “Get Educated, Get Tested, Get Treated, and Get Involved with HIV/AIDS.” Additionally, local AIDS Task Force Executive Director Lisa Terry is encouraging African Americans to come together in the fight against HIV/AIDS by wearing red and participating in a photo opportunity at 2:00 p.m. on February 9 at the African/African American Historical Museum located at 436 E. Douglas Avenue in Fort Wayne. For further information, call (260) 744–1144. According to the AIDS Task Force of Northeast Indiana, African Americans make up approximately 14 percent of the US population, but account for 44 percent of new HIV cases, and have been shown to have a shorter survival period after AIDS diagnosis than most other racial or ethnic groups.
