Ontario health officials are recommending a new treatment combination of the injectable drug ceftriaxone and the antibiotic pill azithromycin for gonorrhea, following the lead of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The recommendation comes in response to the spread of some 32 strains of gonorrhea that are resistant to standard antibiotics. Gonorrhea is the second most common sexually transmitted infection in North America.
