Despite the Bush administration's opposition to clean needle exchanges, the American Foundation for AIDS Research (AmFAR) has allotted $300,002 in grants to five needle exchange programs nationwide. AmFAR officials announced May 13 that they were providing the grants in the hopes that the effort will reduce HIV transmission among IV-drug users and their sexual partners and children. Programs that will receive the grants include the Minority Task Force on AIDS, which will work in conjunction with the Bronx-Harlem Needle Exchange Program; the Lower East Side Needle Exchange Program of New York; the Drug Policy Foundation in Chicago, Ill.; the Boulder County Health Department in Colorado; and the San Francisco Department of Public Health.
