As part of a settlement between management and workers, employees at a federal prison in Allenwood, Pa., will soon receive masks to prevent the spread of tuberculosis. The decision follows the positive TB tests of nine correctional officers who were exposed to an infected inmate early last year. According to union officials, Allenwood had the masks in its possession before the incident occurred, but did not provide them until it was too late. The new agreement states that the prison warden will "cease all violations" of federal guidelines for preventing TB transmission, including those set by the Bureau of Prisons, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. None of the officers involved have developed active TB, but most experienced adverse effects as a result of the potent drugs they were given as a precaution.
