Researchers at Johns Hopkins University's Center for Chemical Dependence plan to analyze a mixture of herbs developed by a Vietnamese scientist for the treatment of addiction to opium, heroin, and possibly cocaine. Testing of the mixture, called "heantos" by the Vietnamese, should take several years. According to Don Jasinski, director of the Johns Hopkins center, several existing drugs treat heroin addiction, but none work as effectively as experts would like. Pharmaceutical firms, he adds, have shown relatively little interest in developing anti-addiction drugs.
