German doctor Guenter Eckert was sentenced to six-and-a-half years in prison on Monday for the death of a woman to whom he had administered a HIV-tainted blood transfusion. The court found that Eckert failed to screen thousands of blood samples in the 1980s, but so far, this is the only AIDS death resulting from the neglect. The Eckert case is one in a string of prosecutions against the German blood business. Three executives in Koblenz were convicted in 1995 for improperly testing blood samples, leading to the death of at least two people.
